What the world is saying about CHATTERTON
The U.S. expat Mr. Jones sews up album of the year honors by track one.
Seemingly naming his sophomore album after an English poet who poisoned himself with arsenic at the age of 17 and was only posthumously acknowledged as a genius, Chelonis R. Jones makes it explicit
CHELONIS R. JONES IS A PECULIAR CHARACTER, WHO HAS TRANSFORMED OVER THE YEARS INTO THAT OF THE DIVA RECLUSE. RELUCTANT TO PERFORM LIVE, THIS NEW YORKER BASED IN EUROPE SINCE THE 90'S, MORPHED INTO THE MAVERICK OF TWISTED ELECTROPOP/HOUSE...AND THIS IS SUBLIMATED BY THAT MAGNETIC VOICE. THERE IS RARELY A CLICHÉ STAMPED TO HIM, AND IT IS TRUE HE COULD SING FROM THE TELEPHONE BOOK, AND IT WOULD STILL SOUND FASCINATING. AT ONE POINT, WE SOMETIMES TEND TO FORGET TO CONCENTRATE ON HIS PRODUCTIONS, AND BEND TOWARDS HIS POETICS, AND HIS SOMETIMES SURREAL, MANTRA-LIKE PRASES IN HOUSE. FANS OF "ONE &ONE" (2002) AND "I DON'T KNOW?" (2003), WILL FIND MORE THAN ONE POP JEWEL ("ON THE RUN") ON THE NEW CD. "CHATTERTON" REFLECTS THE ATYPICAL DARK TONE OF ITS AUTHOR: A LONG, SYNTHETIC JOURNEY INTO AESTHETICISM.
If Barry White's booming voice gave the impression his balls were around his ankles, and The Bee Gees' pitch suggested theirs were somewhere near their chins, in Chelonis R. Jones's case you suspect there are actually two USB ports where his testicles should be!
PERHAPS IT'S THE INFLUENCE OF HIS WORK AS A PAINTER, BUT IT DOES FREE HIM OF ELECTRO'S TYRANNICAL STRUCTURE AND LETS HIM CREATE A RICH, DARK ELECTRONIC SOUNDTRACK...RECOMMENDED... BUT NOT TO BE TAKEN LIGHTLY!
Chatterton will go far to scratch your outré-soul itch.
Chelonis R Jones does still succeed in bringing across his personality. But therein lies the problem, as it's a personality too few people will be able to pick out or identify with, when it's presented in this way.He may undoubtedly be something of a genius, and is certainly a high
The real question is who the album is aimed for, with so many genres, it may split opinion. The real answer is everyone, as its appeal is much broader than you`d think, and Jones is an artist that deserves nothing less, for sheer invention alone.
The arrival of Death couldn't be better timed to match the black rock signs of life within the surreal electronic solar system of Jones' Chatterton. Jones' braiding of word and sound is subliminal, like when Pornography (as in a song that sounds like that particular era of the Cure) arrives in the wake of a track called "Tornogrpahy." In the audio "Che-ography" he has created with dozens of studio collaborators (charted on his MySpace), a cat-lady character from a 12" single (2007's "Helen Cornell") can cameo in a song by another recording endeavor about a girl who suffers when "the pimps and crack dealers hit her...where the good lord split her."
I think he is content to reside on the sidelines, exclaiming his poetic licence and broadcasting his unique style to an ever-widening range of admirers. His will to declare his androgyny and his various neuroses is abundantly clear and, when you listen to his lyrical statements, they are packed with remarkable imagery related to hitting the depths of penury, yet charting his personal growth, by means of enlightenment and tremendous hope and aspirations for the future. Yet, somewhere deep within this man’s being lies a troubled soul that is capable of displaying remarkable misanthropy and a fear of confinement. Whether you can believe him or not, this is an album of great depth and intensity that warrants repetition!
Genius? Only time will tell. Visionary? Very much so!
There's a compelling charm to producer / artist Chelonis R. Jones and clearly a whole lot more to him than his ability to craft delicious electro house tuneage. New York born Chelonis is a conceptual songwriter and a cosmosexual purveyor of art.
There is simply no other vocalist out there with the same magic about it as Chelonis R. Jones -The guy's been blessed with the kind of voice that stops you
Einer der größten Vocalisten der elektronischen Musikszene.
When I was reading the BLOW UP interview and the review (you had 8 out of 10, which is the highest score they usually give... Tiga had 7, Fisherspooner 5, Juan Maclean 5, bla bla bla), I was like "FUCK! They can see what is really DIFFERENT!".
An erratic, an irregular Mr Jones. An astonishing masterpiece from one of the most intriguing artist of the last years...Chelonis is back with one of the most intense albums around.
CHATTERTON è un disco colto, difficile, spigoloso, imperfetto, rock, schizzofrenico, poetico, drammatico, profondo, epico, electro, oscuro, cinematico, house, doloroso, autobiografico, istrionico. Un disco che svela la forza e la debolezza dell'atto creativo.
The album is fantastic! The new Chelonis level. Lot of respect for what you're doing!
In Chelonis R. Jones, our little cultural movement can look at a true artistic personality who is so far beyond the norm that typical journalistic hyperbole would be inappropriate.
What an album! I'm really happy it's finally released. I'm pretty sure it will be a classic. Another masterpiece. Better than Dislocated Genius!
It has been oft stated that I am somehow the miraculous lovechild experiment of Ian Curtis and/or Syd Barrett. I guess "CHATTERTON", "Helen Cornell" & Co. somehow gave this odd theory its stamp of approval. One animated journalist even went as far by saying I was: "Modern Music's 1st Afro-American "Poète Maudit!", Further concluding: "IF BARRETT DESERVED GOLD; CURTIS --SILVER...THE PODIUM'S 3RD PLACE SURFACE MATCHED MY FOOTPRINTS!" --Being meticulously aware of BOTH'S history AND CONCLUSION, I was left statically dumbfounded, not knowing whether to blush in flattery, which is arduous for a black person...or become MORTIFYINGLY ALARMED?!?
Jones' craft is still as insularly dislocated as before. He keeps marching to the beat of his own
... now on with the show!
